OCTOBER'S FLY OF THE
MONTH
I think if I had to choose one streamer above all others to fish for trout, salmon or steelhead, it would be the Nine Three. It has proven over the years to be one of the most productive streamers for all three species. My wife, Jan, caught her first salmon (about seven pounds) on a size 8 Nine Three. Fishing this fly in small sizes also makes it an exceptional choice for brook trout. When fishing for salmon or steelhead, you have a choice of fishing a single or double hook pattern. The choice of size is determined by the size and type of fish you are after.
Tie up a few of these Nine Threes and I am sure they will not let you down. Below is the following recipe for this pattern.
Streamer Nine Three
Hook: | Your choice (single or double) |
Body: | Silver Tinsel

Throat/Underwing: | White Bucktail |
Wing: | Four green saddle hackle (appropriate size to fit hook) tied in flat over the top. |
Top Wing: | Two black saddle hackle tied in upright |
Eyes: | One jungle cock eye tied on each side
| Head: | Black tying thread
|
